North Horsham Parish Council was very saddened to hear that one of its Councillors, Roger Wilton, passed away on 19th February 2018. Roger had lived in Horsham for most of his adult life and was actively involved with local community organisations such as the Roffey Youth Centre and Sayers Croft Environmental Education Centre. He was co-opted on to North Horsham Parish Council in March 2009 joining his wife Sally Wilton as a fellow Parish Councillor. He also served as a District Councillor representing Roffey Ward. Roger served as Chairman of the Council from 2011 to 2017 and it was during his tenure that Horsham Bowls Club moved from just off the Bishopric to their new home next to Holbrook Tythe Barn maximising the use of Parish Council land.
Tributes were led by current Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Alan Britten, who said that “Roger was a friend to many people, an approachable man who when asked would always give sensible and thought out advice. I looked forward to his presence at meetings for his considerable knowledge of the local community and what he felt was in its best interest.”
Cllr Peter Burgess, the longest serving Councillor on North Horsham Parish Council said that “Roger always had a huge enthusiasm, a wide range of interests, an ability to bring people together and to consensus. His humour was one of his greatest assets.”
Cllr Ray Turner, who was Chairman when Roger was co-opted in 2009 commented that “Roger gave a major contribution to the community over the years, to Horsham as a whole and to North Horsham in particular.”
Roger will be missed by all of his colleagues at the Parish Council and their thoughts are with his wife Sally, family and friends.
